Review: The Yellow Cellar Shiraz, 2006, from the Coastal Region of South Africa is a bargain-priced varietal imported by Guardianofthegrape Imports. The grapes saw 12 months of age in second-use oak barrels. The name and label color will confuse many with Yellow Tail Shiraz, although these are from entirely different continents.

In the glass, it is a quite deep, husky red, moving towards opaque in the middle of the glass. Served cellar cool, the nose is full, round and robust, with elements of prunes, charcoal dust and helium balloons.

On the palate, a luscious, round mid-mouth sensation is the first note, surrounded by minerally-sweet fruit and little tingles of acid popping at your cheeks. Powerful with its 14.5 percent alcohol, but balanced within this strong body. Nice finish with sweetness and acid tingles slowly drifting away.

Three full stars. Pleasant and powerful for the price. Terrific value.
